Bangkok

Khao San Road is Bangkok's go-to strip for a night of downing booze-filled buckets, eating a fried scorpion and meeting new people.

Love it or hate it, Khao San Road is Bangkok’s go-to strip for a night of downing booze-filled buckets, eating a fried scorpion (yes we also ate one) and meeting lots new people from all over the world. It is Bangkok´s best party destination with a 1km stretch of bars and clubs, so finding a fun place to sink a few cheap drinks isn’t difficult to find. There are bars with pumping tunes, live music, and a nightclub, along with several places to eat, street stalls selling cheap clothing and kitsch souvenirs, and massage shops. Want a tattoo? It’s not advisable, but you can have that done here too. Pad Thai vendors, kebab stalls, and sellers with grilled bugs set up along the street next to people selling DIY cocktail buckets. Street performers are a common sight and the road takes on a carnival-like air after dark.

Slumber Party Pub Crawl in Bangkok

We initially did this with Slumber Party Pub Crawl.  We have done a lot of the pub crawls with Slumber Party, and all have been absolutely amazing but this one we cant recommend.  The pub crawl without exaggeration was a taxi to Khao San Road, then that was it!  Having done many pub crawls in the past, we had to take over from the lazy Slumber Party staff of Bangkok and we did our own pub crawl!

The Slumber Party Pub Crawl in Bangkok

Moving away from Khao San Road slightly, Bangkok is just like any Western city but with a lot of stuff that would be extremely illegal. The nightlife in Bangkok covers the basics that you can expect to find in cities like London, New York or Los Angeles including huge nightclubs, quirky bars and rooftop bars with epic views. It is also spread out a lot like London, across 10 different locations.

1 – Khao San Road

Bangkok’s go-to strip for a night of downing booze-filled buckets, eating a fried scorpion and meet lots of new people. It is Bangkok´s best party destination with a 1km stretch of bars and clubs, along with several places to eat.  The best bars and clubs of Khao San Road are:

  • The Club
  • Brick Bar
  • Superflow City Beach Club
  • The Bank Club and Restuarant
  • Lava Club

2 – RCA

One of Bangkok’s designated nightlife zones, RCA (Royal City Avenue) is the place to be for night-clubbing enthusiasts. Attracting a mixture of Thai high society, ex-pats, and tourists, everyone joins together on the dance floor to shimmy and shake to the hottest tunes. Many clubs have fairly strict dress codes so you’ll need to dress to impress. Also expect swanky drinks, booming sound systems, and awesome lasers and lights.

3 – Rambuttri Village

Rambuttri Village is found close to the infamous Khao San Road, offering a slightly watered-down experience and a more grown-up vibe. Bars here play a variety of music, including English and American hits, and live bands belt out versions of popular songs from both the past and now. Whether you’re after an ice-cold beer, a glass of Thai whisky with soda, imported spirits, or brightly coloured cocktails, the bars aim to please everyone. There’s also a good selection of places to eat and you’ll still find souvenir sellers and clothes stands and massage shops.

4 – Ekkamai

Close to Thonglor, Ekkamai is quickly becoming known as one of Bangkok’s hipster hangouts. While the night scene here is fairly low key, if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy alternative music, sip an array of craft beers, find great vegan food, and mingle with like-minded souls, Ekkamai’s a great place for a night out.

5 – Patpong

Patpong was one of Bangkok’s original red-light districts, and there’s still plenty of adult entertainment to be found here. There are ping pong shows, coyote dancers, go-go bars, and beer bars mixed in with more laid-back establishments where you can grab a seat next to the pavement and watch the activity on the streets. Patpong also draws people seeking a different kind of evening entertainment; the large night market is something of a magnet for shopaholics, selling clothes, accessories, souvenirs, and more.

6 – Soi Cowboy

The party strip in Soi Cowboy Bangkok
Soi Cowboy is a short (150 metres) street and is another of Bangkok’s red-light districts. Despite being a place that’s known for adult entertainment, it can be a great night out for people who aren’t looking for some nighttime exercise as well. There are quieter bars where you can chill outside and watch the world go by, or you can throw yourself right into the frenetic action and watch as ladies work the pole and fish for punters.

7 – Nana Plaza

Partying at Nana Plaza in Bangkok
Nana Plaza, some sites reference it as Thailands prostitute central, but compared to Pattaya, it definitely isn’t so in your face. The music here is loud, the lights are bright, and there are lots of eye-popping outfits. Most patrons are looking for something more than a drink and don’t plan on leaving alone. Overall, it’s a great venue for those in the mood for an exotic visual experience, and something extreme to talk about when back home.

8 – Thonglor

Thonglor offers a classier vibe than Bangkok’s red-light districts and budget drinking areas, with upmarket wine bars, stylish cocktail bars, and dress codes to make sure everyone’s looking their best. There are plenty of classy restaurants that serve a huge variety of global cuisine. If dancing is more your thing, the area boasts a number of elegant clubs—you’ll find the busiest and the best nightclubs near Soi 10. While previously the playground of affluent Thais, more and more foreign visitors are catching onto the appeal of Thonglor. It’s one of Bangkok’s most stylish, sophisticated, and trendy areas for an evening out on the tiles.

9 – Ekkamai

Close to Thonglor, Ekkamai is quickly becoming known as one of Bangkok’s hipster hangouts. While the night scene here is fairly low key, if you’re looking for somewhere to appreciate alternative music, drink a collection of craft beers, find great vegan food, and mingle with like-minded souls, Ekkamai’s a great place for a night out.

10 – Asiatique

Located on the riverside, Asiatique is a cool place for evening fun. It’s home to a large open-air entertainment complex, mall, and market that only open at 5 pm each day. The Ferris wheel can be seen from far and wide and a ride offers the chance to admire Bangkok’s bright lights from above. There are many places to eat, drink and shop, so foodies and shopaholics will be pleased with the options. Stores and stalls tend to focus on higher-end brands and designer products. You’ll find everything from fashion and literature to electronics and souvenirs. Asiatique also hosts a fabulous ladyboy cabaret show, Calypso Cabaret, and for something even less common, you can watch a traditional Thai puppet show at the Joe Louis Theatre.

Best Rooftop Bar in Bangkok – Sky Bar at Lebua

The view from Sky Bar in Bangkok - highest rooftop bar in the world

One of Bangkok’s most famous rooftop bars, Sky Bar at Lebua leapt to fame after its role in the cult movie “The Hangover II”. It is the highest open-air bar in the world, it offers nothing short of pure magnificence… with price tags to match!

While it may not be a place where you would want to spend an entire evening or visit regularly, it’s a top place to enjoy a few drinks to experience the atmosphere and views and to get the bragging rights!

Other Sky Bars

Bangkok has no shortage of trendy sky bars where you can feast your eyes on impressive city panoramas whilst drinking a glass of wine (or beer) and chatting with friends. While Sky Bar at Lebua is one of the more well-known such sky bars in Bangkok, other popular sky bars include Park Society at the Sofitel SO hotel, Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree hotel, Red Sky at the Centara Grand hotel and Cloud 9.

Soi Cowboy is a short (150 metres) street and is one of the best-known entertainment nightlife districts in Bangkok.

Nana Plaza

Partying at Nana Plaza in Bangkok

I spent my first Bangkok evening here feeling like a king: hot girls are literally pulling you in to sit with them from all directions…. then I realised what this place was…

So, Nana Plaza, some sites reference it as Thailands prostitute central, but compared to Pattaya, it definitely isn’t so in your face. It has many bars, including bars with live music.  Drinks are also cheap!

Overall, it’s a great venue for those in the mood for an exotic visual experience, and something extreme to talk about when back home.

Best Party Hostels in Bangkok

There are two main party hostels in Bangkok:

Slumber Party

This hostel is the craziest by far. If you’re not already at the bar by 8pm, the staff will come to your room and force vodka down you… free alcohol though so unless you’re not wanting to party (at which point you shouldn’t be at this hostel) you will never complain.

Mad Monkeys

This hostel was my favourite, and I would highly recommend it particularly to solo travellers. Downstairs is party with a swimming pool, and dorms and rooms upstairs are very clean relaxing.
